Unit 2: Operations with Positive Fractions and Decimals

As we begin Unit 2, I want to remind you that learning has no due date in this classroom! Unit 1 has been completed (as well as corrections for the Unit 1 test), however any student who still feels that they are struggling with equivalency is welcome to come in for tutorials for additional help.

In Unit 2 we will be learning about multiplying & dividing with fractions and decimals. Students have learned to multiply and divide whole numbers by a fraction, as well as multiplying and dividing decimals in 5th grade. We will build on that knowledge and continue to multiply fractions & decimals. Students will learn to divide fractions by fractions and grow their skills of dividing decimals! This unit we will also tackle multiplying and dividing when given one fraction and one decimal!

Below you will find three essential questions for this unit. In the next ten days, your student should begin to develop ideas about these questions. These will not be on any test, however, I do believe that these key understandings will certainly help them be prepared for our units to come.

Unit 2 Essential Questions:
  1. What is the relationship between multiplication and division?

  2. How can the reciprocal of a positive rational number be determined?

  3. How can the relationship between dividing by a fraction and multiplying by its reciprocal be described?
