Unit 1: Equivalent Forms of Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

We have made it through our first week of school, and what a wonderful first few days it has been! I am certainly counting it a privilege to have your child in my class!

In our first unit of study we will be learning about equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents! This may feel like a review to your student as they worked very hard on equivalent fractions and decimals last year. We will continue to grow our understanding of equivalency by generating and using equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents to solve real-world problems, including those involving money in the coming days.

Below you will find three essential questions for this unit. In the next ten days, your student should begin to develop ideas about these questions. These will not be on any test, however, I do believe that these key understandings will certainly help them be prepared for our units to come.

Unit 1 Essential Questions:
  1. How can multiples of benchmark fractions and percents be determined?

  2. What relationships exist between equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents?

  3. How are equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents related to money?
